Katarak adalah keadaan kekeruhan pada lensa yang dapat terjadi akibat gngguan metabolisme lensa mata berupa penambahan cairan lensa mata, denaturasi protein lensa atau terjadi karenaa keduanya. Kekeruhan tersebut dapat mengganggu jalannya cahaya melewati lensa sehingga pandangan dapat menjadi kabur atau hilang sama sekali. Katarak merupakan masalah penglihatan yang serius karena katarak dapat mengakibatkan kebutaan. Katarak menyumbang kebutaan terbesar pertama di dunia dari keseluruhan kebutaan di dunia.
